Jacques Rouvier

Born in Marseille in 1947 into a musical family, Jacques Rouvier is a distinguished pianist and educator. He studied under Vlado Perlemuter, Jean Fassina, and Jean Hubeau, earning first prizes in Piano and Chamber Music from the Paris National Conservatory of Music in 1965 and 1967. His artistry has been recognized with prestigious international prizes, including the Viotti Prize (Vercelli), the Maria Canals Prize (Barcelona), the Marguerite Long–Jacques Thibaud Prize, and the Fondation de la Vocation Prize (France).
In 1970, Rouvier co-founded a celebrated piano trio with Jean-Jacques Kantorow and Philippe Muller, performing globally for over 35 years. As an eminent pedagogue, he became a professor of piano at the Paris Conservatory in 1979. His teaching legacy extends worldwide, with masterclasses held in Japan, South Korea, Canada, and Europe, including the Maurice Ravel Academy (Saint-Jean-de-Luz) and international music academies in Nice, Les Arcs, and Courchevel. Since 2012, Rouvier has been a professor at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and, more recently, at Musica Mundi in Belgium.
Renowned for his poetic interpretations and profound knowledge of the repertoire, Rouvier’s recordings have been widely praised, winning accolades such as the Grand Prix du Disque and the Grand Prix du Disque Français. His discography includes the complete piano works of Ravel (Calliope) and Debussy (Denon), as well as violin and piano sonatas by Debussy and Ravel with Jean-Jacques Kantorow (Erato). Recent projects include recordings with David Fray for Warner, featuring Schubert’s four-hand works and Bach concertos.
Rouvier has served on the juries of numerous prestigious piano competitions, including the Tchaikovsky, Leeds, Santander, Dublin, Marguerite Long (chairman), Chopin, Rubinstein, and Hamamatsu competitions. He remains a sought-after figure in international music festivals such as Prades, Spoleto, Aix-en-Provence, Kuhmo, and Salzburg. Collaborations with artists like Mischa Maisky and Maxim Vengerov have further solidified his standing in the classical music world.
